Licensed Art Therapist
My professional orientation as an Art Therapist is built on the belief that individuals possess the inherent strengths necessary for confronting life’s challenges. Working creatively within a supportive therapeutic relationship can facilitate building the resilience and resources that enable optimal insight, personal growth and healing. I consider my therapeutic approach to be person-centered, attachment-based, neuro-developmental and trauma-informed. I combine my primary training in Art Therapy with a broad range of therapeutic modalities, including but not limited to CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), Narrative Therapy and Existential Therapy to meet the needs of each individual I work with. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and am currently working towards my EMDRIA approved certification in EMDR. While my training and practice lean heavily on experiential and expressive arts, I am sensitive that not everyone may be attracted to this kind of work, and I always enter the therapeutic relationship with flexibility and the desire to work together in the ways that are most productive and comfortable for my clients. I enjoy working with children ages 9+, adolescents and adults both in-person and online via telehealth. My office is in a beautiful old home that has been converted to inviting office spaces that I share with other mental health providers. I am happy to offer a free 15 minute consultation so we can learn more about each other and how it would be to work together.
Art Therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.
Art Therapy, facilitated by a professional art therapist, effectively supports personal and relational treatment goals as well as community concerns. Art Therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensory-motor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change.
Art therapists are master-level clinicians who work with people of all ages across a broad spectrum of practice. Guided by ethical standards and scope of practice, their education and supervised training prepares them for culturally proficient work with diverse populations in a variety of settings. Honoring individuals’ values and beliefs, art therapists work with people who are challenged with medical and mental health problems, as well as individuals seeking emotional, creative, and spiritual growth.
Through integrative methods, art therapy engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone. Kinesthetic, sensory, perceptual, and symbolic opportunities invite alternative modes of receptive and expressive communication, which can circumvent the limitations of language. Visual and symbolic expression gives voice to experience, and empowers individual, communal, and societal transformation.
